As the countdown to the New Year begins, the Ministry of Environment is taking steps to prevent fireworks, firecrackers, and loud noises during the celebrations.
Starting from the evening of Tuesday, December 31, the Ministry will be running mobile courts to enforce these rules.
The announcement came from Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the adviser to both the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources, on the morning of December 31.
The Ministry is concerned about the noise pollution that often comes with New Year`s Eve celebrations.
In a press release issued on Monday, December 30, Dipankar Bar, Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, reminded the public that such activities are punishable under the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules, 2006.
The first time someone breaks the law, they could face up to one month in jail, a fine of five thousand Taka, or both.
For repeat offenders, the punishment could be even harsher – up to six months in jail, a fine of ten thousand Taka, or both.
The Ministry has also sent letters to various clubs in Dhaka and relevant organizations, urging them to avoid using fireworks, firecrackers, and flying lanterns during the New Year festivities.
In the message, they’ve called on everyone to be mindful of the public good and refrain from these activities, which can be harmful to both people and the environment.
With the government`s strong stance, it looks like this New Year’s Eve will be a quieter, safer celebration for all.
